Q & A with Author JJ Virgin "SIX WEEKS TO SLEEVELESS AND SEXY"

Q: What did you focus your new book on shaping up arms?

JJ: “I’ve always run around sleeveless because it’s how I’m most comfortable. People usually rush up to me and comment on my toned, strong arms. When I thought about it, I realized that having arms you’re proud of and want to display makes you feel powerful and strong. So, I started speaking with women and was amazed at how many of them had the same battle cry. They hated their arms and were embarrassed by them. Some women were so mortified by them that they refused to go to the beach or swimming pools with their families. I didn’t realize that arms were such a source of pain. I spoke with a woman who agonized about being in a friend’s weddings because of the sleeveless dresses and another who hated summer because of tank tops. I wrote my book because arms are one of the easiest things to fix on your body…much easier than your thighs or even stomach fat. In a broader sense, the things you do to create great arms will also help you lose weight in all areas of your body and tone up. So, having great arms is empowering any way you look at it.

Q: Why are arms such an emotional issue for women?

JJ: “Arms are very emotional for women. I’ve heard, ‘I’ll do anything to hide my arms.’ In the winter, it’s okay because we’re mostly wearing sweaters. Then comes summer and arm shame! Women reach for those little shrugs even when it's 95 degrees outside or they own all those tent-like beach cover-ups. Life doesn’t have to be that way. I want women to stop being self-conscious about their arms. I spoke with a mom who always avoided family photos. Why? She had bigger arms than her husband. It’s time to work on your arms and live life full out. No more limitations.

Q: Can you really see a change in your arms in just six weeks? That's a dream come true.

JJ: “Absolutely, yes. Arms are one of the quickest areas of the body to show change. You will see a difference in six weeks if you follow my plan. The quick progress of shaping your arms is also very motivating. I promise that once you shape up your arms you’ll continue on and work on your entire body. My book will give you a simple way to do this that will achieve outstanding results. Your only regret will be that you didn't do this sooner."

Q: What happens to the rest of the body on your program?

A: “The cool news is that your other trouble areas like stomach, thighs and rear end will follow suit and start to shape up too. Obviously, this book is focused on arms and the toning section is for that part of the body. But my plan also has you eating better, doing cardio that works, which I call burst training, burning body fat and looking and feeling better. You will also have more energy. The focus is arms, but the gain will be your overall appearance and feeling great. My training clients will say to me, "It's not just my arms that have responded, I am down two jeans sizes too!"

Q: What are the top three steps in your program?

A: “My top three tips are burst training (more about that in the book), getting proper sleep and not stressing out. It’s extremely important that you get a consistent 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. You also have to be consistent in your exercise program and make sure you’re always allowing good recovery time, so you’re not overdoing it.”

Q: What is a common eating mistake that stops people from losing weight and toning their arms?

A: “Snacking! My eating plan will have you feeling full all day. You won't even want to reach for one of those 100-calorie snack packs that turn your body into a sugar burning machine instead of a fat burning one.”

Q: What would surprise people about your program?

A: “I won’t have you spending an hour doing cardio. It’s harder to build muscle when you do this(plus who has the time for it?!) I teach people not to do endurance exercises that take up so much time and often yield slow or no results. You will marvel at how little time you need to do cardio when you do it “burst-style”-- and how quickly the results will be happen.”

Q: What are the most common mistakes people make in shaping up their arms?

A: “They don’t commit to a comprehensive program. They just do one thing and expect it to work. It’s not enough to just exercise. You need the exercise, the eating and the sleeping. I’ll explain how much and how to do it all in my book.”

Want Hot Arms? Then Head to the Kitchen!

Of course, the right exercise is crucial for shaping slim & sexy arms but it
is only one part of my integrated program for creating the arms and body of
your dreams. You must also feed your arms so that you are building muscle
while burning off the fat. I am sharing three of my top tips from Six Weeks
to Sleeveless and Sexy that you can put into action right away.

How to "Feed Your Arms":

1. Drink up. Be sure to drink eight or more glasses of pure spring water
in-between meals to keep your appetite at bay, support metabolism and burn fat. Don't drink more than a few ounces with your meals because too much water during meals can dilute stomach acid and impair digestion. Drinking pure spring water throughout the rest of your day will also help your stress hormones stay balanced as even mild dehydration can raise stress hormones. And remember sodas, coffee and sugary sports drinks pretending to be water do not count as your daily water intake.

2. Eat a substantial breakfast. Research shows that people who eat a
substantial balanced breakfast of clean lean protein, high fiber carbs and
healthy fat lose more weight AND keep it off. Make a little time in the
morning and indulge in a satisfying meal that will keep you going for hours.
By the way, you don't need to eat "breakfast" for breakfast. If you want a
turkey wrap for breakfast, then enjoy!

3. Follow your workout with clean lean protein and a high fiber carb. The amino acids from protein support muscle growth and recovery, plus your body uses carbs to refuel your muscle stores of energy (glycogen) to set you up for success during your next workout. Please skip the sports nutrition bars, which I always dub "adult candy bars." And remember: Just because you worked out doesn't mean it's okay to saddle up to Ben or Jerry.

You must also snooze or you will lose. It’s crucial to get your 7-9 hours of quality sleep nightly in order to give your body the time to recover and rebuild. I am sharing three of my top tips from my new book, Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy, available for preorder on Amazon.com, that you can put into action right away.

1. Set your alarm clock before you go to sleep. Most of us are used to groaning when the alarm rings in the wee hours of the morning. Instead, I want you to set your alarm to ring an hour before a reasonable bedtime. This is your signal to power down your night. This means you turn the TV off, shut down the computer and turn off your cell phone (or put it in another room). Don’t do anything that will rev you up or that's stimulating to your mind including phone calls, work, watching the news or cleaning up the house. This is time to take it down several notches.

2. Create a sleep ritual. Don’t make going to sleep a haphazard nightly event. Create a sleep routine, which might include having that alarm go off each night at 9 p.m. and then the bathroom, the toothbrush and the half hour of reading in your cool, dark bedroom. Or perhaps you will take a hot bath, sip some herbal tea or listen to soothing music like Enya or Jim Brickman. It's your prelude to a peaceful 7 to 9 hours of unbroken, quality sleep. Half an hour later, you’re under that nice comforter and the lights are off. Inform your family of this ritual. Unless the house is burning down, no one is to disturb you.

3. Get up at the same time each day. Your body is a creature of habit. Get it in the habit of waking at a certain time each day and make sure that becomes your routine. Soon, you won’t even need an alarm clock in the morning because your rested body will naturally wake up, energized, to start a new day.

of your dreams. You must also take care of your arms so that they look
moisturized, tan and glowing. I am sharing three of my top tips from Six
Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy, available for preorder on Amazon.com, that you can put into action right away.

1. Exfoliate Your Guns. After working hard to get great arms, the last
thing you'll want is for them to look ashy, grey and lifeless. The key here
is to exfoliate your arms in the same way you would your face. You can grab
some of the granuals that you use on your mug or create an inexpensive scrub by combining Kosher salt (1/2 cup) with the juice of a fresh lemon and a teaspoon of olive oil. Gently scrub away all the dead skin cells, which get
your blood flowing and allow moisture to penetrate better Remember to give
your elbows and extra scrub to get rid of any tougher cells that are lingering. Rinse when you are done. You can also substitute sugar for salt
if your skin is too sensitive.

2. Moisturize. After a long winter of being hidden under bulky sweaters,
your arms need some extra hydration. Remember the secret to younger looking skin on any part of your body is moisture. Find a good body lotion that's a bit thicker than what you use on your face. I love Bioelement's Vitalization Rich Body Creme. Slather it on your arms twice a day. Do this just after you get out of the shower or the bath because product penetrates twice as much on moist skin.

3. Get the glow. Tan arms are gorgeous, but I don't want you baking in
the sun. A little daily sun is actually great to boost your Vitamin D levels
naturally (20 minutes is ideal), but then you can fake tan the rest of the
way by using LORAC's TANtalizer Body Bronzing Lumininzer. This will give
your arms a subtle, chic glow that's not too much. Now, go show 'em off.

Book Review

Blame Michelle Obama or any of the A-list actresses out there who flaunt their "great guns" in gorgeous sleeveless dresses. Stop being a hater. They earned those arms. They’ve also created a modern phenomenon amongst women called "arm envy." Top wellness expert JJ Virgin says that "arms are the new accessory" and she’s not kidding! Put down the Prada and give away the Gucci. A great set of arms in a Target tank top says it all.

Now that it’s bathing suit and tank top season, it’s time to address those two limbs that have been hiding under those cushy sweaters all winter long. The good news is you don’t have to hate your arms anymore or be embarrassed by them. Virgin hits home in her new book, "Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy," when she talks about how arms actually limit the lives of many women who refuse to go to the beach, pool or even attended dressy functions because they figure it will take 10 shrugs to cover up the area of their body they hate the most. Who doesn't feel for the woman in her book who says that in all the family photos she "looks like a linebacker." Or there's a bride who is in tears because most wedding gowns are, yes, sleeveless.

As a top fitness pro, Virgin tackles the problem once and for her and her plan is shockingly easy, comprehensive and can be done for little cash. It also makes complete sense for your overall health, wellness and energy levels, which will soar thanks to this program. As for the particulars, just grab a mat, a fitness ball, a few weights and put on your cross trainers. She attacks all the areas contributing to your arm fat including your motivation, eating issues and lack of sleep (more on that in a moment.) Then she offers up the exact exercises you will need to tone up.

It's not all lifting weights and pushing up. The great news is that she offers a cardio program that takes under half an hour a few times a week and really does melt off the fat. Then there are the arm exercises that she explains in detail, as if she was standing next to you as your own personal trainer. Along the way, there are great tips called Armed & Dangerous that will keep you moving forward on the plan.

What’s great about this book is you don’t have to be a medical doctor to “get it.” It’s written for women, touching on a nerve, and explains in a simple way how to get rid of this demon for good. Another great aspect here is that Virgin offers two other reasons for your body issues with weight including lack of sleep and stressing out. An actual part of her program is having you rest more and stress less. Busy women everywhere don’t have to feel guilty because they’re doing it for their own health. Yes, you really need 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night for your overall health. Saying no to that PTA bake sale is actually good for you.

Virgin also gets into the beauty of having great arms with a team of stylists and skin care experts who reveal how to create glowing, tan, gorgeous limbs with the help of creams, luminizers and bronzers. They’ll explain all the tricks to the lean, lovely arms you see in the magazines. Her style expert discusses sleeve lengths for arms of all sizes including how to wear the dreaded cap sleeves and how to go sleeveless with confidence. Virgin even asks a top California-based photographer on the best way to pose with your arms, so that your photos will show your great guns.

In the end, it comes down to if it works. By the way, it works wonders because Virgin sent the book out early this winter for this reviewer to try. Not only is a tank top in the future, but two pant sizes are gone and a third is about to slide off. (Honest confession: During a later cardio session in old sweats, they did almost hit the sidewalk!) Virgin jokes that although the book is for your arms that you shouldn’t blame her if the rest of your body shapes up and you feel a surge in energy, too.

Now, if only Virgin could write companion books for our hips, thighs and stomach – stat.
